Mahoneys History

Mahoney Lawyers commenced business on 1 February 2002 when John Mahoney left another Brisbane CBD firm and set up a new practice in offices on Edward Street.  John was joined by future partners Matthew Manz and Antony Harrison together with a number of other employees from his previous firm.  At this point in time the firm had a focus on Property Law, specialising in Management Rights, and Commercial Law.

During the next three years the firm grew steadily with increases in both employee and client numbers. By January 2005 the firm had outgrown its Edward Street premises and made the move to 167 Eagle Street where the whole of Level 15 was leased to ensure there was adequate room for future growth.

In 2006 Antony Harrison became a partner of the firm specialising in Commercial and Corporate Law catering to an ever increasing client base.

The firm was also experiencing a growing demand for Litigation and Dispute Resolution services and in 2008 the decision was made to enter this area of law and Ben Seccombe joined the firm as an Associate to start up a new litigation practice to complement the existing business.

As the firm continued growing and with its focus on property and management rights it became apparent that there was an increasing number of clients located on the Gold Coast. In order to better service these clients and the growing market in this area an office was opened in June 2009 at the emerging commercial centre in Varsity Lakes and Matthew Manz relocated to run this satellite office. The Gold Coast property market is an important part of our business and with this physical presence we have seen excellent growth in our client base and we now have a team of four people in the Varsity Lakes office.

In 2010 Matthew Manz and Ben Seccombe became partners of the firm to create the partnership as it is today. Mahoneys currently has 4 partners and 24 employees, including ten lawyers and 5 paralegals, and has expertise in the fields of property law, commercial law and litigation with a particular expertise in the field of management rights.

In late 2013 when their Level 15 lease was coming to an end the partners decided to move to Level 18 of 167 Eagle Street. A significant project was commenced to fitout the new office area and at this time the brand and image of the firm was also updated and is reflected in the design and style of the new offices.

The name of the firm was changed to Mahoneys in May 2014 when the firm moved into its new space on level 18.

Mitchell Downes is promoted to partner bringing the partnership to a total of 5. Mitchell joined Mahoneys in 2009 and practices in the commercial litigation team alongside fellow litigation partner Ben Seccombe
